The historic Morton Wing staircase looks west onto downtown Chicago through a 2-story bronze clad curtainwall. Designed by Shaw Metz & Associates and constructed in 1963, the curtainwall was comprised of insulated glass units supported by steel sub-framing and pressure bars. The high humidity conditions of the Art Institute's galleries along with the extreme variations in Chicago's outdoor climate caused the internal steel elements to corrode beyond repair. A new bronze clad curtainwall will match the appearance of the original wall, while utilitizing modern curtainwall technology for the support framing system.
